The Best of 2022

As Akoustis brings in a new year, we would like to reflect on the Company's accomplishments of 2022 and celebrate previous success. Akoustis completed the acquisition of RFMi, expanding the Company's acoustic wave RF filter catalog business to include SAW and XTAL products, as well as RF modules. 2022 delivered numerous design wins and volume orders from our patented XBAW® line and Akoustis ramped up to fifteen customers in production with several engagements forthcoming. Akoustis experienced another calendar year with robust revenue growth mainly driven by the advancements made in the Wi-Fi market and a new multi-million-dollar program contract. The Company wrapped up the end of the year with the qualification of internal wafer-level packaging (WLP) and chip-scale packaging (CSP). Here are the details from a few of the Company's major highlights. Akoustis looks forward to all that the calendar year 2023 will bring.

Completed Full Acquisition of RFMi, Brand of Akoustis

In July, Akoustis announced the full acquisition of RFMi, a fabless supplier of acoustic wave RF filters and resonators. RFMi, a brand of Akoustis, has significantly expanded our catalog portfolio with SAW, Xtal, and oscillator products for digital and wireless communication and connectivity, in a wide frequency range of 30KHz to 3GHz. Adding RFMi has provided Akoustis with high reliability, high performance, a wide lineup, and custom design products with a wide array of new sales channels and target markets, including automotive, timing and control, medical, and industrial/IoT. RFMi’s capabilities complement Akoustis’ patented XBAW® platform and facilitate the development of multi-chip modules for varied markets across the 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite technology spaces. The acquisition has also allowed the Company to gain access to new package products that are currently manufactured in certified factories following automotive IATF16949 standards.

Ended Calendar Year with Greater than Fifteen Customers in Production and Thirty-One Design Wins

In 2022, Akoustis’ momentum in Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E continued to grow due to the Company’s industry-leading micro-filter performance. The Company increased the number of customers to fifteen in production across the Wi-Fi, 5G infrastructure, and defense markets and has sixteen commercialized XBAW® Wi-Fi filters. Akoustis, in total, has thirty-one design wins, including one in 5G Mobile, twenty-one in Wi-Fi, five in 5G small cell, and four for CBRS from three leading network infrastructure OEMs. Akoustis continues to see increased demand for XBAW® Wi-Fi filter solutions and hopes to see more customer wins moving forwards as the company fully qualifies BAW filters for the new Wi-Fi 7 standard.

Closed Out The Calendar Year With Robust Revenue Growth

Akoustis finished out the calendar year with 118% revenue growth year over year and 198% growth last quarter over quarter. This was mainly driven by securing key customers in Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, like Aruba and Eero, as well as growth in CBRS. Another driver was Akoustis’ new multi-year, multi-million-dollar contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to pursue new materials and device manufacturing methods. This program could extend the Company’s operating range of their patented and proprietary XBAW® technology to 18 GHz, opening significant new commercial and defense applications to Akoustis.

Akoustis Completes Qualification of WLP Packages

Akoustis completed qualification and released its internally developed proprietary wafer-level-packaging (WLP) technology for 5G mobile, Wi-Fi, timing control, and other markets with its XBAW® filter products and advanced packaging. Akoustis’ WLP process and packages permit smaller form factors, ultra-low size, about ten times reduction from conventional packaging, and lower costs and are predicted to open significant high-volume markets to the Company including 5G smartphones, tablets and computing, and representing a large revenue opportunity for Akoustis’ XBAW® technology. This development has enabled a major milestone for the Company in the mobile market. Akoustis received its first high-volume order from Tier-1 5G mobile customer to include an Akoustis filter in a major chipset OEM reference design. This new order will be used to support large volume deliveries to multiple mobile device manufacturers that will utilize a major chipset OEM reference design and will be the first product to ship with the Company’s internally developed and manufactured WLP in early calendar 2023.
